Icelandic Timber - Sustainable Research Project

Icelandic timber is emerging as a key material in sustainable architecture.

The project Icelandic Timber (islenskttimbur.is) is a research and development initiative led by HAX ark since 2023. Its goal is to map the potential of locally grown timber and to support the development of a full value chain — from forest to building.

The project brings together essential information on Icelandic forestry, sawmills, material properties, structural timber classes, and certification processes such as FSC and upcoming CE marking. It also highlights how Icelandic timber can be responsibly used in modern construction, with guidance from local experts and industry partners.

The website serves as an accessible knowledge base for architects, builders, landowners, and policymakers interested in low-carbon materials, circular design and strengthening Iceland’s domestic timber production.

Funded by the ASK Infrastructure Research Fund.
